Grocery shopping.

I need to get back on track with my budgeting and money saving attempts. Especially now that Sailor Boy is leaving in a few days. I went grocery shopping today. I didn’t buy a whole lot since we still had plenty left from me going shopping right before we had to go to NM (and if spending $750 on plane tix isn’t a budgetary setback, I don’t know what is).

Sailor Boy has decided he wants Thanksgiving dinner before he goes. So tomorrow, we’re going to have turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, marshmallow yams, cranberry sauce and rolls. I found a pumpkin pie in the deli section, so at least I don’t have to actually bake a damn pie. This is going to suck because it’s still too warm to have the oven on for hours.

On to the shopping. I spent $127 + $3 for the tip. That leaves me with $120. Which I’m probably going to completely blow on Thursday. I totally forgot that the commissary was having a case lot sale. If I can avoid buying goodies and just stick to buying things like paper goods and household products, I should be fine.

As for what I bought today, the best deals were b1g1 on the cat treats (which Her Majesty’s cat loves), the Lipton tea was free (saved $3.99), the Ponds wipes were $1.49 after coupons and the cheese ended up being $0.86 per package (the commissary had a buy 6 get $5 off coupon on the shelf). I shouldn’t have to buy cheese for quite a while.

Truly awful week.

Thursday afternoon while I was taking Her Majesty school shopping (we had registered her for public school for the first time in 3 years), Sailor Boy called with bad news.  His mom, who has had cancer for a while, appears to be losing the battle.  His step-dad said the doctor gave her very little time.   He put in for emergency leave and we flew out to NM on Friday to see her.  It was pretty bad.  She’s still hanging in there but I’m not sure for how much longer.  Sailor Boy leaves on a 7 month deployment in a week and I’m pretty sure she’ll no longer be with us by the time he gets back, so I’m glad he got to say his goodbyes.

On Saturday, my aunt passed away.

On Monday, my dad ended up in the ER.  He had a kidney stone too big to pass, so they sent him to Clovis by ambulance for surgery.

On Tuesday, Her Majesty had her first day of school and instead of it being awesome, her lunch money got stolen.

We just got back today.  I would have liked to spend more time at home so Sailor Boy could spend more time with his mom and I could help my parents out while my dad is recovering.  Unfortunately, Sailor Boy needs to get ready to leave.  He also wants to spend some time with Her Majesty before he goes.  We didn’t take her with us because she wasn’t at all close to her grandma and we didn’t want her to miss the first couple days of school.

She did have a better day today though.  Said she made some friends and gets to play the drums in band (which is what she wanted).  Hopefully things are looking up.

I went shopping today. Didn’t do as good as I did last time, but I still did pretty good. I didn’t take pictures either because today was pretty busy and I just didn’t have the time to set it all out and do that. Lots of running around, paying bills, trying to get Sailor Boy’s uniforms and stuff for deployment, etc… So on groceries, I spent $177. After a $3 tip for the bagger, I have $70 for the next 2 weeks. I did take a picture of the receipt again (well, half of it as the other half didn’t come out so great).

Sailor Boy and I also get an “allowance”. After the bills are paid, and all that jazz, we each get a certain amount of money to last us for 2 weeks that we can spend on whatever we want. I get $75. Normally it lasts me most of the 2 weeks. I don’t usually want a whole bunch of stuff. This time, it’s only payday and I’m down to $10. Season 4 of Supernatural came out today. It’s my favorite show and I’ve watched every season 3 times.

I also bought myself a cute Sigg bottle. I’ve been wanting one for a while and I think this will save money in the long run. I drink a lot of bottled water because the water here tastes funky. I recently started using a Pur pitcher. I think between that and the Sigg, I’ll be able to kick the bottled water habit.

Change of plans.

We’ve decided against the cruise to Alaska.  There are just too many variables.

First of all, he’s supposed to be back a month before the cruise leaves.  That isn’t necessarily when he’ll be back though.  Could be earlier, could be later.  Then if he does get home in time, there’s no guarantee they’ll approve his leave.  Also, we aren’t 100% sure what we’d do with Her Majesty.  I’m not leaving a 16 year old home alone and she’ll still be in school.  The one person I know here that I trust enough to keep an eye on her will be moving soon.

So all that would have to go right.  If it doesn’t, we’d be out a lot of money.  They told us we have to cancel 70 days in advance to get a full refund.  Like the Navy tells us anything 7 days in advance.

We’ve decided to put that money towards the bills so we can get them paid off early and take a shorter, less expensive anniversary trip.  It’s a lot easier to cancel a flight and hotel than a cruise.  With some of the money we had set aside, we got ourselves new laptops though.  So that makes me pretty happy.  I think we’ll probably save the cruise as a 20th anniversary/Navy retirement thing.

So Sailor Boy didn’t get paid on Friday. Turns out that PSD Afloat charged his leave wrong and in the process of correcting it, actually cut off his pay. Fun, huh? We have NO clue when it will be fixed. The last time they did something like this, it took 2 months to get it fixed. So now we have to be VERRRRY careful with our money until they get it taken care of.

I went grocery shopping today. I stuck pretty closely to my list this time and ended up spending $116.39. Well, I wrote it for $10 over so I could tip the bagger and grab some dinner with Tiff on the way home so I actually spent $126.39. I didn’t feel like putting everything out for a picture so I just took pics of the receipts. Click to enlarge if you actually want to see them.

The Comic-Con post

Ok, I’m finally getting around to posting about Comic-Con.  For those of you that don’t know what Comic-Con is, here ya go….

Originally showcasing comic books, science fiction/fantasy and film/television (as was evident by the three circled figures appearing in Comic-Con’s original logo), and related popular arts, the convention has expanded over the years to include a larger range of pop culture elements, such as horror, anime, manga, animation, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels.

Along with panels, seminars, and workshops with comic book professionals, there are previews of upcoming feature films, portfolio review sessions with top comic book and video game companies, and such evening events as awards ceremonies and The Masquerade; a costume contest, and the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival which showcases shorts and feature length movies that do not have distribution or distribution deals.

Mostly I was interested in the tv show and movie panels.  During the panels, they’ll show previews and some of the cast and writers will come out and the audience can ask questions.   I got to see some really cool panels.   The ones I missed and REALLY wanted to see were Legion, Zombieland, 2012, True Blood, Fringe, Lost and Ray Bradbury.  I also missed the Charlaine Harris autograph signing. 😦  There is just SOOO much to do and see and it all overlaps.  Not to mention the lines to get into anything are ridiculously long.

I got pics.  Not great pics, but pics all the same.  In some of the panels I had to sit pretty far back and I have a point and shoot that is a total POS.  The zoom sucks.  I need a better camera.  Seriously.

The worst pics were of the Big Bang Theory panel.  Which sucks because the whole cast was there.

One of the more entertaining panels was the Wonder Women panel.  Sigourney Weaver looks fantastic for someone going on 60.

The Fear Clinic panel was awesome.   Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Clive Barker, Danielle Harris and Robert Hall were there.  I got to sit 20 feet away from Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees.   How cool is that?  Clive Barker was supposed to be the moderator but he got stuck in traffic so the moderator was Spider from Powerman 5000 (which is an awesome band).

Peter Jackson, Neill Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley were at the District 9 panel. Peter Jackson talked briefly about The Hobbitt.

Jennifer Love Hewitt (Melinda Gordon), Jamie Kennedy (Eli James yuck), Camryn Manheim (Delia Banks) and Christoph Sanders (Ned Banks) were at the Ghost Whisperer panel. Apparently Melinda is going to have the baby and then they’re going to jump the show forward 5 years. Not sure how I feel about that.

Jensens Ackles and Jared Padalecki were still filming so they weren’t at the Supernatural panel.  😦  Misha Collins (Castiel) and Jim Beaver (Bobby Singer) were there though.

The gorgeous Tom Welling (Superman/Clark Kent), Justin Hartley (Oliver Queen/The Green Arrow), Calum Blue (Zod), Allison Mack (Chloe), Erica Durance (Lois Lane) and Cassidy Freeman (Tess Mercer) were at the Smallville panel.  I only got decent pics of the guys though.  Heh, don’t know how that happened.

I did end up getting Sherrilyn Kenyon’s autograph.  She is one of my favorite authors and was super sweet.  She was giving away copies of her graphic novels that she’d sign and Dark Hunter wristbands.  I also got a Dark Hunter bag and Lords of Avalon pin.  She signed my copy of Acheron and she also signed a book for Private Pinhead’s new wife (who happens to be a big fan too).

Adrian Paul from The Highlander was there and he signed the case from my Highlander DVDs.

I’ve always thought that Her Majesty has quite a lucky streak.   For example, a couple months ago she wanted to go see Great Northern, which is one of her favorite bands.  It turned out the concert was at the House of Blues and she’s not old enough to go.  She was really upset.  A few weeks later, she found out they were playing a show that was going to be brodcast online and they were playing it at a radio station that’s just a couple miles down the road from us.  She got to go and hang out with the band.  They remembered her from MySpace so they gave her t-shirts and signed them for her.

One of the main reasons she wanted to go to Comic-Con was for the Gerard Way/Umbrella Academy panel.  Gerard Way is the lead singer of My Chemical Romance and also writes a comic called The Umbrella Academy.  For Her Majesty’s 13th birthday, we were living in NM but flew down to San Diego to take her to an MCR concert.  For her 14th birthday, we got her a limited edition Umbrella Academy poster signed by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba (this is how much of a fan she is).  So she was thrilled to go to the panel.

After the panel, there was a raffle to get Gerard Way’s autograph.  We had gotten 3 of the raffle tickets (one for each of us) and to nobody’s surprise, we had one of the winning tickets for her.  So here she is with Gerard (that’s the back of her head because she wouldn’t turn and look at me).

Then we were bummed because we missed the True Blood panel.  Yes, Her Majesty likes True Blood.  Yes, I’m probably a terrible mom for letting her watch it.   Well, on Sunday, we saw a bunch of people with True Blood bags.  As I stopped to take a picture of something, I saw a couple with the bags.  I told Her Majesty to go ask them where they had gotten them from.  They told her they had gotten them at the panel.  She chatted with them for a couple minutes, then as we were walking away, they stopped us.  The man handed her the bag and said they didn’t really need two and that she could have his.  He said she had to make him a promise though.  She had to promise to watch Psych on USA because he was one of the co-producers.

Then as we finished talking to them and were walking away again, I noticed the bag looked full.  I asked Her Majesty if there was something in it.  She opens it up and inside is more True Blood stuff.  A card, a notebook, the first novel of the series (which we already have though) and a t-shirt (which I swiped from her because I gave her the 2012 t-shirt I got).  I wish I remembered the guy’s name becaue that was pretty cool of him.

Aside from the True Blood stuff, they give away tons of free crap.  T-shirts, bags, posters, bookmarks, lanyards, cards, trading cards, matchbooks, books, pens, pencils, keychains, buttons, stickers, etc…  We even got Zombieland hand sanitizer (which cracked me up).

And here are some random photos from my wanderings around the exhibit hall.

I am an idiot. This morning I got up to go grocery shopping. I didn’t eat before I left. When I got there, they were cooking steaks in the demonstration kitchen. Steaks that smelled so good, I was about to start gnawing on my arm.

I ended up spending 222.31, which leaves me 27.69 for the next two weeks. It should be fine though because Sailor Boy leaves on the 10th and won’t be back until the 21st. I don’t cook much when he’s gone (hence all the convenience food). I did buy a lot of junk. 😦 Bleh. Bad me.

Although I must point out that the tp, paper towels, cat litter, razors and toothbrush heads alone cost $50.  Just sayin’.
